Amy Binder is SNF Agora Professor of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University. She is an award-winning author of three books, including, most recently, The Channels of Student Activism: How the Left and Right Are Winning (and Losing) in Campus Politics Today. Her research has been widely reviewed in the media and academic journals. She is an elected member of the Sociological Research Association, and has been a visiting scholar at the Rockefeller Center in Bellagio, Italy, the Russell Sage Foundation, and the Center for Advanced Study in the Social and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford.

Colleges and universities should seek to enhance civic engagement and inclusive dialogue among all of their constituents and accentuate research with direct, real-world impacts. They must welcome faculty, students, and outside partners from a wide range of ideological perspectives and social backgrounds. They should seek to be forums for debate, disagreement, and deliberation.
